Chat & AI Modes

Overview

The Chat experience supports two AI modes tailored to different tasks:

• Lawyer Mode: Concise, legally oriented answers grounded in official sources with precise citations
• Deep Research Mode: Broader exploration with iterative, multi-hop retrieval for comprehensive analysis

Both modes return English summaries with source links to Dutch public law when relevant, and can also search through your organization's uploaded documents.

Start a new conversation

1. Open Chat (top navigation → Chat)
2. Click "New Conversation"
3. Select AI Mode (Lawyer or Deep Research)
4. Choose privacy settings:
   • Private: Only you can access
   • Organization: All organization members can view
5. Optionally add tags for organization and filtering
6. Ask your first question in English

Understanding AI Modes

Lawyer Mode

What it does: Lawyer Mode uses advanced Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to search through curated legal databases, including Dutch public law from overheid.nl and your organization's uploaded documents. It retrieves the most relevant passages and provides focused, citation-backed answers.

Best for:

• Quick, precise legal questions
• Finding specific obligations or requirements
• Getting citeable answers with exact references
• Time-sensitive research with immediate needs
• Questions requiring direct legal authority

Characteristics:

• ⚡ Fast response times - optimized for speed
• 📚 Direct citations to legal sources - every claim is backed by specific documents
• 🎯 Focused, concise responses - gets straight to the point
• ✅ Grounded in authoritative documents - only uses verified legal sources
• 🔍 Precise retrieval - pulls exact relevant sections from law databases

How it works:

1. Analyzes your question to identify key legal concepts
2. Searches through indexed legal databases and your files
3. Retrieves the top 20 most relevant passages
4. Synthesizes a concise answer with direct citations
5. Provides links to source documents for verification

Example questions:

• "What are the GDPR data retention requirements?"
• "What is the deadline for filing annual reports under Dutch law?"
• "Define 'good faith' in Dutch contract law"
• "What are the specific penalties for Woo non-compliance?"

Deep Research Mode

What it does: Deep Research Mode combines Google Search integration with AI analysis to explore topics comprehensively. It can discover information beyond curated databases, finding recent developments, case studies, scholarly articles, and diverse perspectives across the web.

Best for:

• Complex, multi-faceted legal questions
• Comparative analysis across multiple sources
• Exploring legal context and implications
• Comprehensive understanding of a topic
• Research requiring recent developments or broader context

Characteristics:

• 🌐 Broader scope of research - searches beyond legal databases
• 🔗 Multiple source cross-referencing - combines insights from various sources
• 📊 Contextual analysis and connections - explains relationships between concepts
• 📖 More thorough, detailed responses - provides comprehensive explanations
• 🔄 Iterative exploration - can discover unexpected relevant information

How it works:

1. Breaks down complex questions into research components
2. Performs web searches using Google Search integration
3. Analyzes multiple sources including legal sites, academic papers, and news
4. Synthesizes findings from diverse perspectives
5. Provides comprehensive analysis with contextual understanding

Example questions:

• "How has data protection law evolved in the Netherlands over the past decade?"
• "Compare employment termination rules across different sectors"
• "What are the environmental compliance implications for manufacturing companies?"
• "What are the current debates around AI regulation in the EU?"

Switching Between Modes During Chat

One of the most powerful features is the ability to switch AI modes mid-conversation without losing any context. This allows you to adapt your research approach as your needs evolve.

How Mode Switching Works

When you switch modes during a conversation:

• ✅ All conversation history is preserved - the AI remembers everything discussed
• ✅ Future responses use the new mode - immediately applies the new approach
• ✅ No need to repeat questions - the AI maintains full context
• ✅ Seamless transition - switching takes just one click

Automatic Intelligent Prompts

The system intelligently monitors your conversation and suggests mode switches when beneficial:

Switching to Deep Research: When in Lawyer Mode, you'll see a blue prompt suggesting Deep Research if:

• Your question requires comprehensive multi-source analysis
• The topic would benefit from broader context and exploration
• You're asking complex, open-ended questions
• Multiple follow-up questions indicate deeper investigation is needed

Switching to Lawyer Mode: When in Deep Research Mode, you'll see a green prompt suggesting Lawyer Mode if:

• You need quick, focused answers with precise citations
• The question is straightforward and specific
• Fast response time is more important than exhaustive analysis
• You want direct legal references without extensive exploration

Using the Prompts

When a switch prompt appears in your conversation:

1. Review the suggestion - The prompt explains why switching might help
2. Click "Switch Mode" if you agree - The transition happens instantly
3. Click "Dismiss" or X if you prefer to stay in the current mode
4. Continue chatting - The next AI response will use your selected mode

Example Prompt Appearance:

• A colored banner appears between messages
• Includes an icon (🧪 for Deep Research, ⚖️ for Lawyer Mode)
• Shows clear explanation of the benefits
• Provides "Switch Mode" and "Dismiss" buttons

When to Switch Manually (Via Prompts)

Even if the system doesn't automatically suggest switching, you can request it. Here are scenarios where switching is beneficial:

Switch to Lawyer Mode when you:

• Need quick, actionable answers
• Want specific legal citations and references
• Are working under time constraints
• Need to validate a specific legal point

Switch to Deep Research when you:

• Want comprehensive understanding of a complex topic
• Need to explore multiple perspectives
• Are researching for in-depth reports or analysis
• Want to discover connections between different legal concepts

Important Notes

• One-way preservation: Once you switch, you cannot switch back mid-conversation (but you can start a new conversation in either mode)
• Mode indicator: The current mode is always visible at the top of your conversation
• No data loss: Switching never deletes or loses any messages
• Instant application: The next AI response immediately uses the new mode

Multi-Source Search

Chat searches across multiple sources simultaneously:

1. Public Dutch Law: Official sources from overheid.nl and related databases
2. Your Organization's Files: Uploaded documents in your Files section
3. Legal Databases: Curated collections of Dutch public law

The AI automatically determines which sources are most relevant to your question and combines information intelligently.

Best Practices

Crafting Effective Questions

1. Be Specific: Include relevant details (dates, parties, legal domains)
2. Use Plain Language: No need for legal jargon (AI understands both)
3. One Topic per Question: Break complex queries into multiple questions
4. Provide Context: Mention relevant background in follow-up questions

Example Progression

Good question flow:

1. "What are the main obligations under the Woo (Open Government Act)?"
2. "How do these obligations apply to municipalities?"
3. "What are the penalties for non-compliance?"

Less effective:

1. "Tell me everything about Woo compliance for municipalities including penalties and procedures"

Using Tags

Organize conversations with tags:

• By Topic: "GDPR", "Employment", "Contracts"
• By Client: "Client-ABC", "Project-XYZ"
• By Status: "Active", "Review", "Archived"

Tags make it easy to find relevant conversations later.

Conversation Management

Privacy Settings

• Private: Only you can view the conversation
• Organization: All organization members can view and contribute
• Change privacy settings anytime via conversation settings

Editing & Deletion

• Edit conversation title and tags at any time
• Delete conversations you no longer need
• Organization admins can manage all organization conversations

Sharing Results

Share insights from conversations:

1. Copy specific AI responses
2. Download conversation transcripts (coming soon)
3. Reference conversation IDs in team communications

Integration with Other Features

Files

Upload documents to enhance Chat:

• AI automatically searches uploaded files
• Combine private documents with public law sources
• Ask questions that span both domains

Speech

Convert speech transcriptions to chat:

1. Transcribe audio in the Speech feature
2. Click "Sync to Chat"
3. Continue analysis in a Chat conversation

Source-Linked Transparency

The assistant references official documents where possible:

• Direct links to overheid.nl and other authoritative sources
• References to your uploaded documents
• Clear indication of source type

Always validate summaries against the provided links before relying on them for critical decisions.

• AI remembers previous questions and answers
• Refine your understanding progressively
• Explore related topics naturally

Conversation History

Access your conversation history:

• All conversations saved automatically
• Search by title, tags, or content
• Filter by date or AI mode

Troubleshooting

AI Response Quality

If responses aren't meeting expectations:

• Try rephrasing your question
• Switch AI modes
• Add more context or specifics
• Break complex questions into simpler parts

Source Availability

If sources are missing:

• Some topics may not have direct source documents
• Try broader or narrower questions
• Ensure uploaded documents are properly indexed

Technical Issues

• Refresh the page if messages don't appear
• Check your internet connection
• Clear browser cache if experiencing persistent issues
• Contact support for ongoing problems

Billing & Usage

Chat usage is included in all plans:

• Trial: 20 total queries
• Professional: Unlimited queries
• Business: Unlimited queries with advanced analytics
• Enterprise: Unlimited queries with custom integrations

Query limits reset based on your billing cycle. Check current usage in Settings → Subscription.
